DFA TRADUÇÕES answers below the most frequent questions about translation services.

1. What is lauda (page)?

It is a “measure unit” to assess the translation cost in Brazil. One “lauda” equals one page with 25 lines, each line with 40 characters.

2. How to calculate the cost for a translation?

The price of a translation is assessed usually through the number of  “laudas” (pages). Lauda is a measure unit used in written translations. The assessment was adapted for computer and it was determined that one lauda corresponds to 1,000 characters in the text (with no account for the blank spaces, according to the Deliberação da Jucesp [Norm of the Junta Comercial do Estado de São Paulo] for the electronic lauda, published in the D.O.E on 14/08/2003). The number of characters may be checked through MS Word® as follows: open the document to be translated and click “Tools” on the menu, then “Count Words”; divide the total number of words by 1,000 and the result will be the number of pages/laudas to be translated.

If you don’t have the document to be translated on any electronic file format, get the page with most text, count the number of lines and characters and multiply the two values. Divide the result by 1,000, and you will have the number of pages/ laudas. The total price will be determined by the number of laudas multiplied by the price of each lauda.

3. How to send and receive the text to be translated?

Aiming to guarantee speed and commodity, your company can send us the text by e-mail, fax or mail.

Depending on your needs, the translation will be delivered on a diskette or CD (usually in a MS Word® document) together with a printed version or simply by e-mail, fax or mail.

4. What is a “tradução juramentada” (by translator under oath)?

It is a translation under oath of the translator done in the appropriate format to be officially and legally acknowledged before the public organs and institutions; it is printed in personalized official stationery including the personal and Professional data of the Tradutor Público Juramentado – that is, the Public Translator Under Oath who signs the translation, whose signature may be accredited by notary and consular public agencies in Brazil to be officially acknowledged.

Some Documents that may need translation under oath:

  • Documents for judicial aims (processes, judicial decisions, letter of attorney);
  • Financial and administrative Documents of multinational companies (balances, statutes, by laws, contracts of association, registration certificates, administration reports, etc.);
  • School Documents (historic, diplomas, certifications, etc.);
  • Documents integrating bid proposals;
  • Personal Documents (birth and wedding statements, identity cards, driving license, etc.)

The translation mustn’t include anything else other than the signature of the translator under oath. Any signature in the translation under oath other than the public translator’s will void it.

5. How is the price quotation for written translations prepared?

The price quotation takes into account two basic variables: the type of translation and the volume to be translated.

If the text is technical, involving a series of terms from a specific area, the price will be higher than that of a non-technical text, since it implies more research and glossary development work. On the other hand, we offer progressive discounts by volume. Hence we can negotiate lower prices for large volumes of text.

Contrary to our competitors, we usually don't charge urgency fees. Therefore, we can execute your translation project in very short timeframes with no additional costs to you.

6. Hos long does is take to have a translation project done?

It depends on the kind of document and the volume to be translated, to be negotiated according to each specific case or need.

For up to 200 pages / laudas it usually takes 5 (five) working days. If urgency is requested, we may deliver it in fewer days. Depending on the case, an “urgency fee” might be charged. Contact us to have your specific needs analysed.

We always manage to meet our client's needs for short terms and great volumes of translation.
